Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine Education Program has been created in line with the vision and mission of our faculty. The curriculum is a student-centered, problem-solving, integrated, community-based, elective, systematic education model developed by Harden (SPICES), which forms the framework of medical education change.
Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine has an education program model that is integrated on the basis of organ systems in the first three years (horizontally integrated), where basic and clinical sciences are associated through Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Clinical Introduction Sessions (vertically integrated), and also frequently includes community-oriented educational goals. In Period IV and V, there is horizontal and vertical integration based on clinical internships, with less emphasis on basic sciences and more on clinical sciences. Different educational methods such as classical lectures in the form of interactive applications, face-to-face education, symptom-based education, small group studies, laboratory applications, clinical skills training, bedside applications are used in the education program.
Since 1998, all professional skills that a physician candidate should have in medical education have been taught to students in groups of 8-10 students with a structured education model on phantom models in the Professional Skills Laboratory of the Department of Medical Education. As of the 2002 - 2003 academic year, our curriculum has been reorganized to cover the entire National Core Education Program (NCEP) and PBL practices have been included in the curriculum since this date. From 2014 and onwards, our education program is regularly updated according to the 2020 National Core Education Program (NCCEP).
Topics such as preventive medicine, medical ethics, medical ethics, medical philosophy, health economics, medical informatics, clinical and scientific research skills, communication skills, evidence-based medical practices, which we attach great importance to in training good physicians, are included in Term I, II and III education programs as the Behavioral, Social and Humanities Vertical Corridor in a way to cover the relevant 35 topics in NCCEP-2020.
Social Support Projects have been carried out since the 2007-2008 academic year. In addition to opening Social Support Projects to reflect the perspective of different professions to the program, there are inter-professional cooperation trainings of professional groups related to Health Services (Nurse, Paramedic, 112 Physician, Workplace Physician, Occupational Health Safety Specialist, Faculty Member of Law). The program also includes elective courses that will develop students' interests.
